Safe Lifting & Specialist Manual Handling Techniques
Lifting is a major component of manual handling. Lifting causes significant sudden impact on the body if carried out incorrectly and is a significant cause of MSDs. In most businesses we have to turn the existing "macho-man" attitude into a safe lifting and moving attitude and embed this within the health and well-being culture of the organisation.
We know that some workplaces have unique and distinctive manual handling job requirements and our Backsafe Trainers are skilled in determining safe work method procedures to suit these requirements. This includes moving small stable loads, to moving large heavy or awkward loads requiring specialist handling skills. We train each participant to use their body correctly without harming themselves or the objects that they are moving. We can instruct staff to safely handle moving equipment such as hoists, drum movers and gas bottle movers. We teach from the foundational concept that if a piece of plant or lifting equipment is present – then use it. However if equipment is not available then some manual handling is needed to move certain things. Sometimes team lifting is needed and this technique above all others needs a training system applied at all times. We can discuss with you issues such as back belts and their proper use. These are many issues around lifting that need to be trained and assessed.
These training sessions are conducted in groups of up to 20 people at a time and take between 100 - 120 minutes to complete. This is a tailored program.
Who should attend this training?
All staff who manually handle or supervise the moving of heavy, awkward, long, unbalanced or otherwise difficult objects.
How is the program's content covered?
This practical hands-on and face to face program is undertaken briefly in the classroom to assess the existing skills and needs of the class and then on the workplace floor using the props of that particular workplace. Due to the interactive nature of this manual handling program, the maximum class size is 20 participants.
Where and when is this program delivered?
This program will be delivered in your workplace using your tools, your equipment and your materials, in any geographical location. We are insured by RTO Insurance to indemnify you against public liability claims and we are also professionally indemnified. The training can be at any time of the day or night depending on your schedule. We understand that it is important for many organisations to have the same standards across different workplaces and so we are willing to travel to any site.
There are no prerequisites for this program. A basic level of English is preferred, although because the program is mostly practical, participants can get it with a little from a fellow worker and our skilled trainer.
